Working from Home Style
You have some choices to make every morning. Do you want to just roll off the bed and drag yourself to your workstation in the same clothes as what you slept in? Or will you actually change? But change into what?! How are you supposed to dress when you work from home? Do you HAVE to get dressed up every day? It is entirely possible to work naked, but chances are that you put some kind of clothing on every day.
You might be deciding between a pair of slacks and some cozy sweatpants. You don’t see any meetings on the schedule for today. No one will ever know what you wore today but you. Do you choose to be comfortable, or do you choose to dress professional? Whatever that even means anymore….
Let’s keep it real. If I got no one to see today, then I probably won’t want to put on slacks or jeans or even a bra! But as a stylist I know how great of an impact my clothes can have on my mood and even my productivity for the day. I believe in being comfortable but remaining stylish. Here are some tips on how to be stylish while still remaining comfortable:
Tip #1: Opt for Intentionally Composed Comfort
Choose pieces that feel relaxed but look put-together. Think soft joggers with a structured tee, or knit pants with a tailored sweater. The contrast between comfort and polish signals to your brain that you're ready to work, not just lounge.
Tip #2: Wear Clothes That Fit How You Want to (and Will) Move
Are you planning yoga breaks? Zoom meetings? Deep work sessions? Dress accordingly. Stretchy leggings or soft trousers support flexibility, but add a drapey cardigan or breathable tunic to elevate your feel while still allowing easy movement.
Tip #3: Use Color and Texture to Set Your Tone
Even at home, colors shift your energy. Warm hues (like olive, caramel, or soft blush) bring calm and focus. Cool tones (like slate blue or lavender) promote clarity and energy. Textures—like ribbed knits or soft cotton—offer tactile comfort, subtly enhancing how grounded you feel.
Tip #4: Accessorize—Just Enough
A simple necklace, a cozy scarf, or even a cute hair tie can remind you that you dressed with purpose. These small details break the monotony, giving you a sense of completeness that can translate into intentionality in your tasks.
Tip #5: Prioritize How You Feel, Not How You Look
The best WFH outfits are the ones that make you feel confident, energized, and ready. If a sweatshirt and soft joggers let you lean into your day with ease, own it—just pair them in a way that consciously reflects your intention to work, not just relax.
Taking the time to pay attention to the details of your outfit and making conscious decisions about things that make you feel good will make a difference to the start of your day. You don’t have to put on professional clothing or jeans if you don’t want to. Some days we just want to be comfortable and still feel great when walking past a mirror.
Find pieces that you love and bring them together using strategies like color coordination. Add some accessories and you will take your home outfit to the next level! Don’t be afraid to take risks and get creative!
